City Takes Historic Action, Raises Minimum Wage To $23.46 Per Hour
FOREST PARK, Ga. — Nov. 8, 2024 — In a groundbreaking move to ensure economic justice and improve quality of life for its employees, the Forest Park City Council unanimously voted to increase the city’s minimum wage to $23.46 per hour. This historic decision reflects the city’s commitment to providing fair compensation, attracting top-tier talent and setting a benchmark for surrounding municipalities.
The new wage rate, which is more than three times higher than Georgia’s state minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, will apply to all full-time city employees, reaffirming Forest Park’s dedication to supporting its workforce, reducing economic inequality and contributing to a thriving local economy. By establishing a minimum wage significantly above the state and federal levels, the city is taking tangible steps to address the rising cost of living and provide sustainable income for its employees.
“Our employees are the backbone of our community, and it is imperative that we compensate them in a way that allows them to thrive, not just survive,” said City Manager Ricky L. Clark, Jr. “This decision to increase the minimum wage is a bold step toward economic empowerment, and I am proud to work with a Mayor and City Council that are deeply committed to investing in our people and our city’s future.”
The wage increase is expected to have a positive impact on employee retention and recruitment, as well as foster a supportive, motivated workforce that can focus on providing exceptional service to the residents of Forest Park. The City Council’s decision also aligns with Forest Park’s vision of being an employer of choice, demonstrating that the city values its employees as its most valuable asset.
“The City of Forest Park is setting an example for other cities in Georgia and across the nation,” added Mayor Angelyne Butler, MPA. “Our community deserves the best public services, and the best way to ensure that is by valuing our public servants and giving them the financial security they deserve.”
The implementation of the new minimum wage is scheduled to begin before Jan. 1, 2025, giving departments time to adjust budgets accordingly. Forest Park joins a growing movement among cities across the country prioritizing living wages and equitable compensation.
