Forest Park Police Install RedSpeed Cameras For Back To School Safety
FOREST PARK, Ga. — Aug. 3, 2023 — Classes are back in session, as this week kicks off another exciting school year for Clayton County Public Schools. With students, teachers and faculty members returning back to the classroom, the Forest Park Police Department is reminding drivers to slow down when passing through dedicated school zone areas.
To assist with ongoing back-to-school safety efforts, the department announced that it has installed RedSpeed Cameras in all school zones located throughout the City of Forest Park. The high-tech, speed-monitoring cameras are equipped with a built-in radar that detects the speed of vehicles traveling through each school zone – all with the goal of helping to reduce the likelihood of crashes or injuries, especially those involving children.
"Seeing that there will be a lot more pedestrians and vehicle traffic throughout the school year, it is imperative for drivers to practice safe driving habits and be ready to stop at a moment’s notice," said Forest Park Police Chief Brandon Criss. "Slower speeds create a safer environment for children, so motorists should be aware of local speed limits before, during and after school hours, and refrain from distracted driving."
The following are recommended safety tips when driving through or near dedicated school zone areas:
- Always be prepared to slow down: Speed limits in school zones tend to be five to 10 miles per hour below the normal posted speed.
- Stop for buses: Passing a stopped school bus is against the law and can result in motorists receiving a ticket.
- Stop for crossing guards: If the school employs crossing guards, make sure you stop for them when they are holding up a stop sign. Drive extra slowly near the crosswalks so you can be prepared to stop quickly, if needed.
- Watch for pedestrians: Keep your eyes open for sidewalks, as well as around driveways, intersections and residential neighborhoods.
- Give yourself extra time when driving through a school zone: Being in a hurry near pedestrians is never safe, especially in high-traffic areas.
- Avoid distractions: Always focus exclusively on the roadway. Limit the use of cellphones and any other electronic devices; try not to look for something in your car while driving in a school zone.
