September Designated As National Preparedness Month
FOREST PARK, Ga. — Sept. 15, 2022 — September is National Preparedness Month, and the City of Forest Park, along with the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS), is encouraging all residents and businesses to prepare for natural and man-made disasters.
“Georgia always sees its share of unpredictable weather every year,” said GEMA/HS Director Chris Stallings. “That’s why National Preparedness Month is the ideal time for individuals, families, schools and businesses to plan and prepare for all types of emergencies. Having a plan in place for your family is just the start, but building a ready kit, knowing your evacuation routes and having a plan for your pets puts everyone in a better position in case a disaster happens.”
During National Preparedness Month, individuals are encouraged to take steps toward ensuring the safety of themselves, their families, homes, businesses and communities during an emergency. The Ready Georgia webpage offers tools to assist with creating disaster plans and designing emergency kits.
A basic emergency supply kit could include the following recommended items:
- Water (one gallon per person per day for several days)
- Food (at least a several-day supply of non-perishable food)
- Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert
- Flashlight
- First aid kit
- Extra batteries
- Extra cash for purchases
- Whistle (to signal for help)
- Dust mask (to help filter contaminated air)
- Plastic sheeting and duct tape (to shelter in place)
- Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties (for personal sanitation)
- Wrench or pliers (to turn off utilities)
- Local maps
- Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery
"Having a solid plan during a disaster can ultimately help protect you, your family and even property," said Forest Park Fire and Emergency Services Chief Latosha Clemons. "Disasters can happen anywhere at any time. That’s why it is important to stay prepared."
