FOREST PARK, Ga. — Sept. 18, 2023 — The future of Forest Park just became even brighter after city leaders and Georgia Power announced the official launch of ONE Light, a new strategic initiative which aims to complete the upgrade and replacement of the city's aged high-intensity discharge (HID) light fixtures with more reliable, efficient light emitting diode (LED) lights.

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately three-fourths of all pedestrian-related fatalities occurred during periods of darkness. Research from the NHTSA also suggests that new or refined lighting can reduce the risks of certain types of crimes and encourage pedestrian activity at night, specifically near sidewalks, transit stops and bicycle lanes.

"Having dependable street lights provides better overall lighting, increases property values and can help serve as an effective tool when it comes to keeping our communities safe," said Mayor Angelyne Butler, MPA. "Through our partnership with Georgia Power, we are working diligently to ensure that residential neighborhoods, businesses, recreation areas and public facilities in Forest Park continue to remain safe no matter the time of day."

Prior to the launch of the campaign, city staff and representatives from Georgia Power conducted an in-depth analysis of the city's current street light inventory in order to evaluate area outages and future needs. Officials plan to use the collected data to enhance visibility for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists during dark hours, while also working to increase public safety efforts in areas throughout the city.

"Whether you're a person who commutes during evening hours or someone who simply enjoys a late-night jog around the neighborhood, street lights are an essential part of our everyday lives," said City Manager Ricky L. Clark, Jr. "ONE Light is yet another example of how public-private partnerships are stepping up in order to address some of the concerns coming directly from constituents."

LED street lights are known for their long lifespan and, in some cases, can last up to 10 times longer than conventional street lights. By reducing the frequency of replacements and maintenance, LED street lights have become a staple in hundreds of small, medium and large municipalities across the nation.

"As one of metro Atlanta's premier energy partners, we are committed to developing smart, innovative solutions that will not only improve Forest Park's lighting infrastructure, but also help conserve energy and reduce carbon footprint emissions, while improving visibility throughout key areas for those who choose to work, live or visit the city," said Christopher Williams, Area Manager, Georgia Power.
